Looked up to because- The man who inspired millions, Lance Armstrong was the symbol of hope in American sports. Armstrong is best known for his fight with cancer, as he was diagnosed with stage three testicular cancer in 1996. The cancer was so bad that it spread to his abdomen, brain and lungs. After overcoming cancer by chemo and surgery, Lance was able to make a tour comeback. From 1999-2005, Lance won the Tour de France seven times in row, showing that if you fight cancer, anything is possible. He went on to create the LiveStrong cancer foundation, which created yellow arm bands to sell to fight cancer. These yellow armbands were so popular that you probably know someone who has worn it at one time. What happened- In January of 2013, after years of investigations and pressure, Lance Armstrong admitted he had doped during his cycling career. The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) had been accusing Armstrong of doping based on blood samples and testimonials from former teammates who decided to snitch on him. Armstrong was stripped of his seven titles, and banned from all cycling events.Today- After years of lying, Lance Armstrong has finally told the truth. Although never failing a drug test, and many viewing the USADA going after Armstrong as a witch hunt, many now view Armstrong in a negative light. He withdrew from LiveStrong, and sadly people started pulling donations away from the charity. I know the charity was founded by a man who lied, but he lied about SPORTS. LiveStrong continues to fight for a good cause, the fight AGAINST CANCER. Donations should still be pouring in, despite Lance’s lies.
Looked up to because- Having both of his legs amputated below the knees, Pistorius became the first double amputee to participate in an Olympic event when he showed up to London in 2012. He participated in the 400 meter race, and was a part of South Africa’s relay team. He went on to win Silver in the men’s 400 meter racing event, as well as winning numerous golds in the 2012 Summer Paralympics. His accomplishments inspired many around the world in 2012, and he became known as the blade runner, nicknamed for the prosthetic legs he used to win races. What happened- On February 14, 2013, Pistorius was accused of murdering his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp. She was said to be shot in the bathroom of Pistorius’ South African home, and a 9mm pistol was found at the scene of the crime. Today- Oscar Pistorius has been charged with premeditated murder, with prosecutors claiming Pistorius killed Steenkamp after an argument at the home. Oscar’s defense group claims that Pistorius thought an intruder had entered his home, and fearing for his life, fired four shots through the bathroom door. It was only after the shots were fired that Pistorius realized Steenkamp wasn’t in the bed and feared the worst. He broke down the door and carried her bloodied body downstairs, where she sadly died. While the story doesn’t add up, the defense is arguing that there is a lack of evidence for a premeditated murder charge. The hearings will continue, Oscar will continue to cry louder and louder and a South African national icon will fall.
Looked up to because- Pretty simply, he was considered one of the greatest golfers to ever play the game, and had memorable moments throughout his career that no golf fan could soon forget. What happened- In November of 2009, Woods left his home after an apparent argument with his wife at the time, Elin Nordegren. As Woods was driving down his street, he crashed his Cadillac into a fire hydrant and a tree. News of the accident broke, but what seemed like a harmless accident spiraled out of control. Somehow, a car crash helped make Tiger Wood’s numerous extramarital affairs come to light. Everything went downhill for Woods from there, as many mistresses came out with proof they had slept with Woods. What was once a squeaky clean golfer now turned into a sex addict..Tiger Sheen! Today- Divorced from his wife, Woods can now get with any woman he so desires. Woods struggled on the golf course following his scandal, and for a few years many feared that his career may be over, the psychological stress eating away at him. Now, Woods is looking like the old Tiger again, and after recently playing a round of golf with him, President Obama declared “He’s on another planet”.
Plaxico Burress- The man who caught the game winning touchdown against the then undefeated Patriots in the 2007 Superbowl was the toast of New York. At 6’5”, he was a tall receiver who could jump up over a defender and catch any ball with ease, developing great chemistry with Eli Manning. The Giants were cruising along in 08, looking to repeat when Plax accidentally shot himself in the leg his own gun hidden in his pants. What do you get for shooting yourself? Two years in prison, released from the Giants and a football career that hasn’t been the same since.
Michael Vick- Vick is an electric quarterback. He was the face of the Atlanta Falcons, and was a fan favorite for his athleticism and speed in the pocket. There was no quarterback like Vick. He was my favorite football player growing up, and when it came out in 2007 that Vick was involved in a dog fighting ring, where he himself killed numerous dogs, I was disgusted. Vick was released by the Falcons, lost all of his money and went to prison for 23 months. Now, Vick speaks out frequently on animal abuse, but is still one of the most hated athletes in sports. He took over as the Philadelphia Eagle’s starting QB job in 2010 and took the league by storm with his fantastic play. Vick has struggled with turnovers and injury ever since, but he recently signed a one year deal to stay in Philly, and fight for the Eagles starting QB job in 2013.
Manti T’eo- Who was once considered a slam dunk first round pick, it doesn’t seem that way now. please note, what happened to Manti is nothing compared to the other people on this list, and what T’eo did doesn’t make him a bad person. T’eo was catfished. Despite playing for one of the most recognizable colleges in America, the Notre Dame star apparently couldn’t get a girlfriend, opting to date a girl he met online named Lennay Kekua. In September of 2012, Manti T’eo lost his grandmother, then 24 hours later Lennay had passed away from battling Leukemia. With the two losses fresh in his mind, T’eo led the Irish to a huge win over Michigan State, making big plays and getting vaulted into the Heisman conversation as well as America’s hearts. In January 2013, Deadspin reported that Lennay Kekua never existed, and many wondered if Manti was in on the hoax, trying to get Heisman sympathy votes. Lennay turned out to be a dude, yes Manti was talking to a guy on the phone for years. Manti claimed he was the victim of a hoax, but did admit to keeping the lie going after he had found out mid December that Lennay was never real. Now Manti’s draft stock has fallen, and some think he isn’t even a first rounder anymore. Manti hopes teams look at what he has done on the field, not off it. But still, this story was one of the weirdest stories I have ever heard. He seems like a good kid, hopefully he gets a REAL girl.
<Manti went from being a star on the field, from defending himself off of it>
Alex Rodriguez- After being traded to New York in 2004, Alex Rodriguez was the next Yankee legend, the man who would carry the Yankees to many World Series titles. While he did that in 2009, every other year for Arod has been painful in one way or the other for Yankee fans. He was awful during the 2004 ALCS series against the Red Sox, when Arod famously trying to slap the ball out of Bronson Arroyo’s hand while running to first base. Rodriguez has awful career playoff numbers, and numerous incidents off the field, from cheating on his wife, worrying which celebrity he would date next or opting out of his contract and announcing it as a World Series game was going on. The man, who was supposed to break Barry Bond’s tainted home run record, suddenly was accused of steroids in 2009. Rodriguez admitted to the use, saying he only juiced while with the Texas Rangers from 2001-2003. Now, that may not be the truth anymore, as a new report out of Miami has linked Rodriguez with another PED supplier, Anthony Bosch, claiming Rodriguez took performance enhancers recently while with the Yankees. Yankees fans are sick of Arod, and sick of his awful contract that has five years and 114 million remaining, a contract that the team is desperate to rid themselves of. Fans are sick of his playoff disappearances, and he deserved to be benched during the 2012 playoffs. Arod is a declining player with a lot of baggage. Who was once a young Seattle Mariner player, one who many thought would be the best shortstop ever, is now considered to be a dumb, unclutch and cheating player.
